My balance is tricky in flickering light
 Slowly pulling into this place
a new place, a new face
 Window to window
 You’re so close, so close
This is how it’s supposed to work
You’re moving forward, I’m in reverse

 Sitting motionless
 You’ve got my attention
Go ahead and stare as long as you want

There’s a million things that never will happen
 With our fragile egos
 It’ll never last, never last
Instant karma
We don’t know, we don’t know
That’s how it used to work
You’re moving forward, I’m in reverse

 Sitting motionless
 You have my attention
Go ahead and stare as long as you want

Sitting motionless
 You’ve got my attention
Go ahead and stare as long as you can

 My balance is tricky
In flickering light
 Slowly pulling away
 Window to window
 You’re so close, so close
 You’re moving forward

I perceive An ocean of love Just out of reach But sometimes You can smell the breeze Wafting proof Tasting faith A clue, a hint, a promise And it’s enough It’s just enough Climbing not falling Is the intention A higher something A higher everything Not looking under rocks Not looking at the clock Just doing the right thing At every turn and test Winning but not being the best Enough Just enough If you’ve ever been privileged To get a sense of the real joy of it Then your tears are not sadness But of the beauty of it And the nearness of it Near enough It’s near enough

Patience Shifting angles Gently bending She wonders when she’s gonna break I see her over there She’s sitting pretty That’s not me That’s not me She’s sitting over there And pulling out her gun And points it at me But that’s not me Wounded Suffocating Always pretending Pulling tricks behind her back I see her over there Apologizing That’s not me That’s not me She’s sitting over there Blood-stained fingers That’s not me That’s not me She wonders when she’s gonna break She wonders when she’s gonna break Sitting pretty, apologizing That’s not me Sick and pretty, she’s exploding That’s not me I see her over there She’s sitting pretty That’s not me That’s not me She’s sitting over there She pulls out a gun She points it at me That’s not me I see her over there, Apologizing That’s not me, no That’s not me Sitting pretty Sitting pretty I see you over there Sitting pretty

When the wolf Howls outside our door Trying to destroy Everything we’ve worked hard for A furious ghoul Rubbing salt in our wounds A builder of walls Blamer of all A two thousand and nineteen fool Not so much Being brought back down to earth As being slammed face first In the dirt Icarus like At least he, she, they tried Enkindler, brightener, bringer of delight With all my might I’m looking for your light The two thousand and nineteen fool So much to say That I can’t say anything It looks so far That I can’t even start Ready the pen But the ink stays in I try to lighten up But the weight stays in my heart Two thousand and nineteen fools We’re two thousand and nineteen fools Two thousand and nineteen A little wise the best fools be

Concrete cracks Suffering grass Flying coach with a stained glass window Butterfly, balancing Flying free, flying free This home again Where I land The grass is green Green enough for me Gathering Tapes to Never play Oversized Tiny accidents Perfectly lifeless And cold Consequence Candy tongues Bruised and Beautiful This home again Where I land The grass is green Green enough for me And I’m home again Where I land The grass is green Green enough for me

We’re folded in airwaves We’re on repeat, on repeat You told me about the famous ghosts I told you about the machines I said too much You told me about the love Plug me in Plug me in How can I remind you When you’re distant through the noise You took me to a hundred And you decay I stay the same I break too much My bones are turning into rust Plug me in, plug me in Wish I had a pulse Blinking red You just can’t shut me down Static skin, paper thin Holding on to holding patterns Holding on to holding you Folding in, lights out Flipping over, switching numbers Holding on to holding patterns Holding on to holding you Wish I had a pulse Blinking red

Say yes to tenderness Say we could be free Many gates are left wide open Many times lost my direction And I’m a casualty of all this Don’t even know what it is Taking notes Making notes Tears rolling down a wax raincoat The consolation is that I went out fishing I came back with a catch Duty bound or nowhere bound Lost and found in the Lost & Found Say yes to tenderness (Don’t even know what it is) Say yes to tenderness (Don’t even know what it is) What is a desert rainbow, Lord? It’s a hoop for the lowly No safe cotton wool cloud No lead-lined shroud No protection Only direction Navigating towards The safe confines Of like minds, quick minds, free minds A serene kind of Thinking people Watching people Listening people Harmless people Say yes to tenderness (Don’t even know even know what is) Harmless people

I feel the switch I’m climbing trees Above the canopy Until I can see I forget what lies beneath me The air gets thin I start to float Instead of falling I feel myself letting go Now I’m a child and I’m looking up This somehow feels like going home Give me a day to play in clouds As the memories fade I take in the sound The hum of heaven is pulling me in The air gets thin I start to float Into the atmosphere I feel myself letting go Now I’m a child and I’m looking up This somehow feels like going home I wave, I wave, I wave at airplanes I found, I found up here a safe place I wave, I wave, I wave at airplanes I found, I found up here a safe place I wave, I wave, I wave at airplanes

When you’re beside The river of love On the banks there You might slide For where there’s water There’s mud And death might be your bride Lead in to paradise Then lead out again And your mind is a cascade of dreams You lose perspective And you’ll lose your friends For some vague utopia Aside sorrow’s streams The song goes on And it’s foolishly romantic I’ve been right and I’ve been wrong I’ve made my mistakes God help us all We can’t talk Like they want us to talk We can’t walk Like they want us to walk The ruined romantics So many missteps It’s all in my head, as always Full of dread, as always I’ll be falling on my sword While trying to get back on that horse I can hardly believe it The song goes on And it’s foolishly romantic I’ve been right and I’ve been wrong Yes, I’ve made my mistakes Who can help us all? We can’t talk Like they want us to talk We can’t walk Like they want us to walk The ruined romantics I had a heart I had a heart We put our boots on We leave the house We follow directions As best we can Navigating the shifting sand And then we come up to the door The entrance to that place And we fall Fall on our face

She used to turn silver black Like iron red and copper green But with buried limbs the hours are heavy So heavy that she can barely breathe Time, time will say “I told you so” Sweating walls, a weeping sea We can’t change the channel They smother her young While she’s on her knees She’s on her knees She used to turn silver black Like iron red and copper green But with buried limbs the hours are heavy Oh so heavy that she can barely breathe Time, time will say “I told you so” Sweating walls, a weeping sea We can’t change the channel They smother her young Now she’s on her knees She’s on her knees

about

Waving At Airplanes is the fifth full-length from electronic composer/producer Will Thomas’s collaborative Dive Index project. With vocals shared between Natalie Walker and critically-acclaimed English multi-instrumentalist Merz, the album marries memorable melody to evocative mood in equal measure.

Co-written and produced by Thomas, Waving At Airplanes takes its title from a wonderfully optimistic attempt at connection confined to the very young and the very lost. Other themes include missed connection (“Window to Window”), desert beauty (“Pristine Wilderness”), artificial intelligence (“Wish I Had A Pulse”), contentment with what we have (“Near Enough”), and the current political climate (“We Can’t Change The Channel”, “19 Fools”).

Recorded mostly at Thomas’s L.A. studio and mastered at Hollywood’s legendary Bernie Grundman Mastering, Waving is at once an audiophile delight and, warmed by Walker’s finely-grained timbre and Merz’s emotive expressions, a reassuringly visceral expression.
